Alejandro Caffarelli, Employment Attorney, Invited to Speak at Chicago Bar Association, NELA National Conference

Alejandro Caffarelli, noted Chicago employment attorney, has been invited to speak on two panels within the coming months – one at the Chicago Bar Association and the other at the Annual Conference for the National Employment Lawyers’ Association.
On May 9, 2018, the Chicago Bar Association’s Employment Law Committee will present the annual Spring Seminar, where Mr. Caffarelli will speak on the use and misuse of biometrics in the workplace. Caffarelli & Martin Ltd. is one of a small group of firms spearheading claims under Illinois’ new Biometrics Information Privacy Act, which generally prohibits the collection of biometric information such as fingerprints without prior written consent. Many employers have recently implemented fingerprint and other biometric scanners for time tracking purposes; and while biometric scans have the benefit of accurately identifying employees the non-consensual use of such technology comes at a great cost to privacy and the integrity of personal information which, unlike numbers or other unique identifiers, cannot be changed and has the potential to be irreparably abused through identity theft or other means. The CBA’s theme for the Spring Seminar is Technology in the Workplace.
On June 29, 2018, Mr. Caffarelli will moderate a panel at the National Employment Lawyers’ Annual Conference entitled “The FMLA at 25: Where Have we Been and Where do we go From Here.” Joining Mr. Caffarelli on the panel are Sandra Radtke from Wisconsin and Brooke Timmer from Iowa. Caffarelli & Martin Ltd. has been a strong advocate on behalf of employees who have suffered retaliation or interference with their FMLA rights, and Alejandro Caffarelli has personally tried multiple FMLA cases before federal juries, as well as successfully defended an FMLA appeal before the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
